I'm a registered independent as well (in case I ever want to do nonpartisan work). I actually missed the Daily Show coverage of the first debate, and was so upset!
You're definately right about Kerry keeping Bush defensive. Too bad Bush pulled himself together better by the last debate.
Frankly, I think "Clear Skies Initiative" wins the ironic legislative name.
