So, not too long ago, some friends and I had a girls' movie night with Dirty Dancing and a cute movie I had never seen before called Shag*. The copy of Dirty Dancing was a little old (as in, from when the movie was released on VHS the first time), so all the previews were ancient, and the commercials managed to encapsulate everything that was wrong with the 80s. But one commercial caught our attention because of who it featured.

It was a Mountain Dew commercial from the days before their marketing firm decided that their particular lemon-lime soft drink was EXXXXTREME, so it wasn't quite over-the-top enough to deserve a second look. So, why did we have to rewind the tape to watch it several times? Shirtless Brad Pitt, of course.

Now, I'm sure you're thinking, "Eva, you can see Brad Pitt shirtless in any number of quality movies." And you're right. But where else can you see shirtless Brad Pitt wake-boarding behind a horse? No where, that's where.

Sadly, there is not a copy of this ad available online, or I would totally be embedding right now. Instead, have a '89 Pringles commercial with shirtless Brad Pitt:

*Don't look at me like that. Shag is the official dance of South Carolina, and that's what this movie is about. Dancing. Though, I admit that if, like me, you learned a different definition of "shag" first, it adds an extra dimension of comedy. Especially since they talk about shagging at least once a scene, and two of the main characters enter a shag contest.

It helps to be secretly twelve.

Ha! That's hilarious. And yes, being from NC, there were amusing "shag" moments, including when the woman I helped with teaching kindergarten Sunday school started talking about her shag lessons and how much fun she had shagging. I think I managed to keep a mainly straight, "Oh, that's interesting" face. And hoped the children didn't remember this later and become scarred for life.

Perhaps they will grow up to be defensive shag lovers like one of the friends I watched it with, who gave me a mighty >:( every time I laughed. Better than scarring anyway.

Yeah right! If Brad and those models ate Pringles all day, they'd be saggy as anything. Come on, The Eighties, you think we were born yesterday?

(I was born at the end of '89 ^___^ )

They burned all the calories from the Pringles off with their FEVER. That's how they maintain that physique.

Oh, dear. I'm getting old.

Don't say that. If you appear old, it's only because you are good at keeping secrets. Secretly, you are twelve.

Luckily, I have very few secrets to keep, so I'll stay secretly twelve for a long time.

I still love a lot of the same stuff I watched when I was a kid, so I've been in the process of recollecting a lot of the stuff I got rid of. Watching old previews is one of my favorite parts. It's weird when you can practically recite a trailer that's over ten years old XD

It really makes me want to watch my first run Disney movies, but then again, the previews on those movies are for the films sitting next to them on the shelf.

I loooove old commericials from the 80's. I watched my old copy of The Land Before Time a few months ago, and I laughed and laughed at the Pizza Hut commercial that ran before the trailers.

I think I have a copy of that. I may need to dig that up for comparison purposes.

Now that is quality. Indeed, once you pop, you can't stop. It's actually a wonder current Pringles cans don't have a holdover warning that this product should not actually be taken to reduce body temperature.

Our copy of the Wizard of Oz was taped from the TV, so we have lots of '80s KFC commercials (back when there was a jingle and they didn't refer to the acronym), Michael Jackson as Pepsi spokesman, and the Campbell Soup snowman-kid from the first airing. Oh, and good old Boston news updates from channel 7 back when THEY were the CBS affiliate.

Wow, I especially love the Boston news updates. That must be sort of strange. Any really good news updates, or is it just traffic accidents and shootings?
